The population refers to the entire group of individuals, items, or elements that share a common characteristic and are of interest in a statistical study. This group is the complete set that the researcher wants to draw conclusions or inferences about. 

The population is often large and can be finite or infinite. 

A sample is a smaller, manageable subset or portion of the population. The process of selecting a sample from the population is called sampling.
